ASReml is a high‑performance software package for fitting linear mixed models using residual maximum likelihood (REML). Widely used in quantitative genetics, plant and animal breeding, and multi‑environment field trials, it combines the average information (AI) algorithm with sparse‑matrix methods to estimate variance components efficiently in large, complex datasets. ASReml supports pedigrees and genomic relationship matrices, flexible fixed and random effects, multi‑trait and random regression models, longitudinal analyses, spatial models for field experiments (e.g., AR1xAR1), and factor‑analytic structures for genotype‑by‑environment interaction. Outputs include BLUPs, variance–covariance estimates, heritabilities, correlations, and model diagnostics. It is available as a standalone program with an optional R interface (ASReml‑R), enabling scalable genetic evaluation and robust inference.
ASReml is developed by VSN International. The most popular versions of this product among our users are: 2.0 and 3.0. The names of program executable files are Asreml.exe, ASRemlW.exe and WinASReml.exe.
